Alexis Travers improving water filtration in the Dominican Republic

2015 May 26

Led by Drs. Carrie Fitzpatrick and Adam Heinze, eight Alvernia students will apply their studies of water filtration to the Santo Domingo barrio in the Dominican Republic. Alexis Travers of Wayside, N.J., is studying Early Childhood Education at the university.

Travers completed a cross-discipline Biology/Communication course in the spring, during which students studied water filtration and literacy. In addition, they raised enough money to sponsor a year's worth of water at a school run by the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters in the Los Tres Brazos barrio of Santo Domingo.

"This faculty-led study abroad experience is part of Alvernia University's Global Learning initiatives and builds on Alternative Break trips sponsored by Campus Ministry," said Dean Beth Aracena, Ph.D. "This group is ready 'to learn, to love, to serve' in the mission of the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters"
