Ashley Winters Completed Community Fellowship Program at Alvernia University

Ashley Winters, of Maple Glen, Pa., served more than 300 hours in 2012-13 as a Holleran Center Community Fellow at Alvernia University. Winters, a Special Education major, worked with at-risk children through the program.

The Holleran Center's Community Fellows program, in partnership with Pennsylvania Campus Compact (PACC), gives 25 students an opportunity to enroll as part-time AmeriCorps members while studying at Alvernia University. The program was designed to address compelling community needs in the areas of college access and success, while developing college students as active citizens.

Holleran Community Fellows commit to serving 300 hours over the course of the academic year in tutoring and mentoring programs. In exchange for their commitment, Community Fellows will receive an AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,175 upon completion of their service to be used to pay for graduate school or to pay off student loans. In addition to serving in the areas of college access and success, Community Fellows participate in a series of leadership development and training activities.

In 2012-13, Community Fellows worked with the South Reading Youth Initiative a?" an after-school program run by the Holleran Center a?" as well as Olivet Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the City of Reading. By working with at-risk children and youth to provide career awareness and development of study skills, Community Fellows are assisting K-12 students in the areas of college access and readiness.
