Briana Pearson Begins Alvernia Post-Graduate Year of Service

2016 Aug 31

After earning her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Alvernia University, Class of 2016 graduate Briana Pearson, Mount Bethel, PA, has taken on a new role through the Holleran Center for Community Engagement's Post-Graduate Year of Service. Pearson will work with current Alvernia undergraduate education and science students to bring STEM education to local children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Alvernia Post-Graduate Service Program is designed to provide an opportunity for a motivated graduate of Alvernia to engage with the community, focusing on the delivery of educational programming related to science and sustainability to children from disadvantaged backgrounds in our community.

With an impressive history of service and sustainability volunteerism, Pearson is an ideal candidate for the program. A past president of the Environmental Club, she was a regular participant in Alvernia's four annual Days of Service, served multiple times as a volunteer at the summer "Project Exploration" science camp, and completed more than 100 hours of service in just one of her years at the university.

Pearson will focus on science education at the Reading School District's Millmont and Tyson-Schoener Elementary Schools, and will be working on a community service project to revitalize Mifflin Park Elementary School's green roof. She will work with teachers and college students to develop environmental education lessons that can be integrated into classroom curriculum.
