Hayley Haggerty to Participate in Alternative Winter Break

2017 Dec 7

Hayley Haggerty of Forked River, N.J., will spend winter break helping children and adults in the Los Tres Brazos of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, through an Alvernia University Alternative Break program. Haggerty is studying Occupational Therapy at the university.

Working with a Bernardine Franciscan Sister mission in the Dominican Republic, Alvernia Alternative Breakers will teach English and physical education to K-5th grade children during the day, and teach English to adult learners in the evening. While many peers spend time at beach resorts, these college students will offer workshops on cooking and painting, hold a vacation bible school for children, spend time with sick members of the Los Tres Brazos community, and help the Sisters organize a pharmacy.

Alvernia's Alternative Break programs are offered during traditional Spring Break weeks, as well as during winter and summer breaks. The Campus Ministry service and immersion trips are designed to inspire and empower students to lead lives dedicated to serving the underserved, promoting peace and justice, and working towards the common good.
