Joshua Harmes Volunteers for Franciscan Fridays

2015 Aug 14

Joshua Harmes, of Morgantown, Pa., took part in Franciscan Fridays in the spring of 2015. Harmes is a Occupational Therapy major at Alvernia University.

Named to honor of St. Francis of Assisi, Franciscan Fridays are a monthly service opportunity coordinated by Alvernia's Holleran Center for Community Engagement (HCCE). Staff members accompany 20 to 30 students for each Friday afternoon service trip, in or around the City of Reading. Service sites have included the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, Berks Encore, Shady Hollow Assisted Riding, Aulenbach's Cemetery and Habitat for Humanity. At the completion of each project, participants share a meal together and reflect on the day's project.

ALVERNIA is a fast growing Franciscan university, grounded in the Catholic and liberal arts traditions, that combines diverse academic opportunities with personal attention and an unmatched commitment to community service. Situated on a scenic 121-acre suburban campus in historic Berks County, Pa., the university supports a rigorous and caring learning community that is home to more than 3,000 students.
