Kevin Shainline Spends Spring Break Volunteering in Reading, PA

Kevin Shainline of Boyertown, Pa., volunteered in the City of Reading through Alvernia University's Alternative Break program this spring. Shainline is majoring in Psychology at the university.

By assisting diverse non-profit agencies, students volunteering in the City of Reading are exposed to the vast social and economic inequalities that characterize the country's urban landscape, of which Reading is a poignant microcosm.

While one group of Alvernia students volunteered for Opportunity House, Berk's Encore Senior Center and the Reading Collegiate Scholars program, a second group focused on Hope Lutheran Church's food pantry, Berks Heim and Habitat Restore. Both groups participated in the Manana after-school program.
