Kevin Shainline Volunteers for Reading Collegiate Scholars Program

2015 Mar 31

Kevin Shainline, of Boyertown, Pa., served as a volunteer for Alvernia University's Reading Collegiate Scholars Program (RCSP) in the fall of 2014. The program aims to prepare high school students from the City of Reading to attend and succeed at the college of their choice. A graduate of Pope John Paul II High School, Shainline is studying Psychology at Alvernia.

Many Reading High School students are struggling to make a better future for themselves. Last year, slightly more than 60 percent received diplomas. Many who do graduate have low SAT scores and below basic skills in reading, math, and writing. The combination makes it difficult to adjust to a college curriculum. As a result, few ever graduate from college.

Through the RCSP, Alvernia and Olivet are beginning to help hard-working students break the cycle, by helping 9-12 grade students to be better prepared for college. Students like Shainline are providing regular tutoring, mentoring, and other activities to high school students in the city through the university's Holleran Center for Community Engagement.
