Mary Motuz Performed in "Beggar on Horseback" for Alvernia University Theatre

2012 Nov 26

Mary Motuz, of Toms River, N.J., performed as Mrs. Cady in the Alvernia University Theatre presentation of "Beggar on Horseback," in November. Motuz is a Sophomore Theatre major at Alvernia.

Motuz, part of an on-stage cast of 25 actors and an off-stage team of 20 students, gave seven separate performances of "Beggar on Horseback" over the course of one week, in Alvernia's newly refurbished Theater and Recital Hall. Performers included a cross-section of students majoring in different areas across the institution.

Written by George Kaufman and Marc Connelly, "Beggar on Horseback" is about a young composer (Neil) who makes money doing odd jobs. Neil's only piano student is Gladys Cady, the daughter of a very wealthy family. After a friend suggests Neil marry his student, and she agrees – Neil experiences the fight between profit and soul.
