Morgan Kurtz Spends Spring Break Volunteering in Reading, PA

2015 Mar 13

Morgan Kurtz of Aldan, Pa., volunteered in the City of Reading through Alvernia University's Alternative Break program this spring. Kurtz is majoring in Occupational Therapy at the university.

By assisting diverse non-profit agencies, students volunteering in the City of Reading are exposed to the vast social and economic inequalities that characterize the country's urban landscape, of which Reading is a poignant microcosm.

While one group of Alvernia students volunteered for Opportunity House, Berk's Encore Senior Center and the Reading Collegiate Scholars program, a second group focused on Hope Lutheran Church's food pantry, Berks Heim and Habitat Restore. Both groups participated in the Manana after-school program.

ALVERNIA is a fast growing Franciscan university, grounded in the Catholic and liberal arts traditions, that combines diverse academic opportunities with personal attention and an unmatched commitment to community service. Situated on a scenic 121-acre suburban campus in historic Berks County, Pa., the university supports a rigorous and caring learning community that is home to more than 3,000 students.
