Sean Hartman, of Allentown, Pa., performed as Mr. Cady in the Alvernia University Theatre presentation of "Beggar on Horseback," in November. Heartman is a Senior Theatre major at Alvernia. He was nominated by the Kennedy Center for an Irene Ryan Scholarship after his performance.

Hartman, part of an on-stage cast of 25 actors and an off-stage team of 20 students, gave seven separate performances of "Beggar on Horseback" over the course of one week, in Alvernia's newly refurbished Theater and Recital Hall. Performers included a cross-section of students majoring in different areas across the institution.

Written by George Kaufman and Marc Connelly, "Beggar on Horseback" is about a young composer (Neil) who makes money doing odd jobs. Neil's only piano student is Gladys Cady, the daughter of a very wealthy family. After a friend suggests Neil marry his student, and she agrees – Neil experiences the fight between profit and soul.
