Gift of Life 2022 College Challenge

Students in two courses taught by Dr. Jodi Radosh entered The Gift of Life Donor Program's College Challenge. These students were awarded first place of 18 other colleges and earned a $1,000 prize. The competition encourages participants to use media platforms to promote registering as organ, tissue, and cornea donors. Through their work, Alvernia students inspired over 400 people to register as new donors.

Delta Epsilon Sigma Honor Society Scholarship

Delta Epsilon Sigma is a national scholastic honor society for students, faculty, and alumni of colleges and universities with a Catholic tradition that was established in 1939. The society was founded at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa in 1939 by Father Fitzgerald. It is awarded to a senior that has been initiated as member of Delta Epsilon Sigma with a record of outstanding academic accomplishment, who have shown dedication to intellectual activity, and who have accepted their responsibility of service to others.

Students earn Student Government Association Awards

Several Alvernia students and registered student organizations earned Student Government Association awards for the 2021-22 academic year. The Student Government Association (SGA) works to voice student concerns to both faculty and administration, build a solid foundation between the students and administration, provide active and diverse social atmosphere throughout the university community, and continuously support and fund student club and organization initiatives. SGA Awards are given to a registered student organization (RSO), an RSO president, an RSO advisor, a senator, an event, and an RSO dedicated to community service all of which were outstanding in their efforts to enhance the student body and community at Alvernia.

Alvernia announces fall 2021 Dean's List

Nearly 700 students were named to Alvernia University's Dean's List for the spring 2021 semester. "Congratulations to these talented and determined students for their continued commitment to their scholarly pursuits," said Alvernia University President John R. Loyack. To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must carry a semester GPA of 3.5 or better and take a minimum of 12 credits. "All the students on this list have continued to perform at the highest levels academically and should be commended for their continued success," said Alvernia University Senior Vice President and Provost Glynis Fitzgerald. Alvernia announces spring 2021 Dean's List

Over 700 students were named to Alvernia University's Dean's List for the spring 2021 semester. "Congratulations to these outstanding students for their continued commitment during this especially challenging year, " said Alvernia University President John R. Loyack. "We couldn't be more proud of their continued success." To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must carry a semester GPA of 3.5 or better and take a minimum of 12 credits. "Every Alvernia student showed courage, determination and a deep care for one another that led to another successful semester, despite the challenges presented by COVID-19," said Alvernia University Senior Vice President and Provost Glynis Fitzgerald. Holleran Center for Community and Global Engagement Service Award

More than 40 students were recognized by the Holleran Center for Community and Global Engagement for their dedication to service during an awards ceremony. During the ceremony, students received service awards and pins for their service accomplishments. The honorees all performed more than 100 hours of service in a variety of tracks during their time at Alvernia, incuding helping lead alternative breaks and university-wide service days, completing sustainability projects, participating in educational enrichment opportunities, and helping meet the needs of vulnerable populations in the community.

Nearly 650 students earned associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Alvernia University during the 2020-21 academic year. Graduates from August 2020, December 2020 and May 2021 celebrated by walking across the stage at First Energy Stadium on May 15, 2021.

Alvernia students receive awards in the Pennsylvania Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) State Leadership Conference. Holleran Center honors student service

Alvernia University's Holleran Center for Community and Global Engagement has announced their 2019-2020 student awards. The awards include the Graduation Award for Excellence in Service, which is presented to graduating seniors who have completed at least 300 hours of service to the community as an Alvernia student, the Holleran Center Community Engagement Award, which is presented to graduating seniors who have completed at least 500 hours of service to the community as an Alvernia student, the Holleran Center Fellow Award, which is presented to an inspiring college student leader and rising senior that demonstrates exemplary service and work through the Holleran Center, the Boscov's Reading Collegiate Scholar Award, which is presented to a graduating senior member of the Alvernia Reading Collegiate Scholars Program who is actively engaged on campus and in the community and also has a GPA higher than a 3.3 and the Holleran Center Outstanding Service Award, which is presented to the graduating senior who has completed the highest number of hours in service to the community.

Literary arts journal earns third consecutive international honor

International English honor society Sigma Tau Delta recognized Alvernia students for their work on Zephyrus, the university's literary arts journal, in the Outstanding Literary Arts Journal contest for the third consecutive year. The 2018 and 2019 editions of the publication both received second place. Zephyrus is a student-run publication composed of unique art, poetry, short stories, photographs, and videos from across the Alvernia student body. The Zephyrus board encouraged their peers to submit original creative works that express the theme of "Home," and worked tirelessly through the difficult circumstances of the pandemic to produce the award-winning edition.

Alvernia announces fall 2020 Dean's List

725 students were named to Alvernia University's Dean's List for the fall 2020 semester. "Despite another challenging semester brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, our students once against showed their ability to adapt and persevere," said Alvernia University President John R. Loyack. "We look forward to welcoming back our students for another successful semester on our campuses." To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must carry a semester GPA of 3.5 or better and take a minimum of 12 credits. "Our students and faculty did a tremendous job quickly pivoting to new hybrid delivery models, modified classroom spaces and state-of-the art technology," said Alvernia University Senior Vice President and Provost Glynis Fitzgerald. "These students and their loved ones should be proud of their accomplishments as they overcame so many unique challenges throughout the semester." OT students place first in AOTA Student Conclave Knowledge Bowl

A group of Alvernia University 5th year Occupational Therapy students participated in the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Virtual Student Conclave Knowledge Bowl 2020. The group of students competed against three other occupational therapy programs. The AOTA Student Knowledge Bowl is a trivia-based game consisting of practice questions that could appear on the Occupational Therapy board exam (the NBCOT). Teams received points for answering the questions correctly and the fastest. The Alvernia students received a plaque, a discount off their board exams and exam prep materials, as well as a guaranteed spot for Alvernia University to compete in the Knowledge Bowl 2021. "We were excited about our win and very proud to represent Alvernia University and the Occupational Therapy Department," said team member Emily LeVan. "The conference was also a success to gain knowledge useful for our future occupational therapy careers.

The Alvernia University Women's Council (AWC) was established in January of 2018 by women who are committed to empowering the female Alvernia community. Alvernia announces spring 2020 Dean's List

Over 850 students were named to Alvernia University's Dean's List for the spring 2020 semester. Despite the disruption of the semester by the COVID-19 pandemic and the university's quick transition to an online learning format, over 150 more students earned the distinction from the fall semester. "Our students and faculty showed incredible resilience during the spring 2020 semester," said Alvernia University President John R. Loyack. "The faculty's quick transition to the virtual learning environment and the students' ability to adapt to the changing instruction conditions is truly admirable and provides us with incredible faith as we prepare for the fall 2020 semester." Students participle in Athletic Training Association

Athletic Training Student Association is an organization that lets Alvernia students work on different skills, connect with other Athletic Training students, and provide opportunities to network with Athletic Training professionals by sending members to different conferences, symposiums, and meetings. The association promotes the profession of Athletic Training to the Alvernia University student body and staff, enable association members to become better acquainted through a variety of professional and social activities, provides educational services and resources to athletic training students and the general community, provides community service projects to association members in an effort to better both the Alvernia University community and the general community of Reading, Pennsylvania. 214 Student-Athletes Represent Alvernia On MAC Winter and Spring Academic Honor Roll

75 student-athletes were represented for winter sports, and 139 spring student-athletes earned the honor. A total of 3,851 student-athletes were recognized across the MAC, while 708 earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) during the spring semester. The winter and spring academic honor rolls are comprised of student-athletes who competed in a varsity level sport during the winter and spring seasons and registered a spring term/semester GPA of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) or higher. For winter sports, Women's Indoor Track and Field led the way with 17 honorees, including six students with a 4.00 GPA, and Men's Indoor Track and Field followed with 15 honorees. Women's Basketball was third with 14 honorees, including four 4.00 GPAs. Women's Ice Hockey, who concluded its first season in February, finished with 12 honor roll honorees, including three 4.00 GPAs. Wrestling, also competing in its first season, finished with 11 honorees, including three 4.00's. Men's Basketball rounded out winter sports with six honor roll honorees. For spring sports, Baseball led the way with 26 honorees, including two 4.00 GPAs. Women's Lacrosse finished in second with 19 honorees, including three 4.00's. Women's Indoor Track and Field led the way with 17 honorees, including six students with a 4.00 GPA. Softball finished with 16 honorees, including one 4.00 GPA. Men's Indoor Track and Field followed with 15 honorees, and Women's Tennis finished with 11 honorees, including one 4.00. Both Men's Volleyball and Men's Lacrosse finished with nine honorees, with one 4.00 for Men's Lacrosse and three 4.00's for Men's Volleyball. All seven members of the Women's Golf team achieved honor roll status, and six members of the Men's Golf team were honored. Men's Tennis rounded out the winter sports with four honorees. Across all winter and spring sports, 36 Alvernia student-athletes achieved a 4.00 GPA. They are indicated below with an asterisk next to their name.

Alvernia Campus Lions Club mission is to improve the community. The Lions Clubs International (LCI) has set programs to provide services for the community's needs. The Lions Green Team advocates for the health of the planet through tree planting, recycling, community clean-up, and environmental education. Lions Clubs health initiative is focused on Diabetes and Vision. It is the club's mission to raise awareness of the diabetes epidemic and to prevent blindness as all persons diagnosed with diabetes are at risk for loss of vision. LCI partners with United Nations to address the global issue of hunger and disaster relief in over 200 countries. "Where there's a need, there's a Lion." Loving. Individuals. Offering. Needed. Students participle in Allied Club

Allied Club provides an inclusive and educational environment for the LGBTQ+ community and their allies. The organization will follow the tradition exemplified in "Always Our Children", that God loves every person as a unique individual. Through education and community events, this organization will support all members of Alvernia University and deter any discriminatory actions against any member of the community. Allied advocates for an inclusive space for LGBTQ+ members of the Alvernia community and their allies. Allied empowers students to promote individuality, provide resources and educational events to increase knowledge about the LGBTQ+ community, specifically how to be an effective ally. Through Alvernia University's rich campus life, students enjoy a full calendar of activities and events, more than 60 clubs, intramural sports and student leadership and governance opportunities. The University presents endless opportunities for students to gain leadership, problem-solving, collaboration and teambuilding skills. Students hone lifetime skills essential for any industry or field of study. Student clubs and activities also offer students opportunities to connect with Alvernia's surrounding communities throughout Reading and Berks County, Pennsylvania. Through service, engagement, and leadership, students learn indelible lessons outside the classroom. Campus clubs and activities are among the many ways in which Alvernia students gain real-world experience, contribute to more than 60,000 hours of community service each year, and help the university remain deeply anchored within its communities.
